Port Aransas/Mustang Island

well, i had a very nice get-away this weekend, all thanks to my husband! saturday as we were getting ready for work chris says to me "pack some clothes for tonight" and just kinda left it hanging. i was like "why??" and he said it was a surprise. of course i said "you know there's a Spurs game tonight i want to watch..." (which we won! :) ) long story short, we ended up leaving sunday and driving down to the coast. chris simply took out the map and said "find someplace you want to go near the coast" and then we just went! i guess you could call it planned spontinaity!

i noticed just north of Corpus Christi was a place called Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. this place is amazing!! click on the link for more information. there are several trails you can hike on, plus a driving tour. we started out on one of the birding trails, but soon retreated thanks to some very hungry mosquitos!!! we decided we'd rather not be food for these insects so instead kept going in the car. at the end of the loop is an observation deck overlooking the seashore and the refuge (picture to come soon). sometime when the weather is better and there are less mosquitos we will go back and do some more of the trails. we did see some deer, though, and at least heard some birds in the treees.

after that adventure we took the ferry over to Port Aransas and drove down Mustang Island where we found a quaint hotel called Alister Inn which had a very friendly desk clerk, despite the fact that she is a Dalls Mavericks fan! when she saw our credit card which has the SPURS logo on it she had a few things to say about our team, mainly that she wasnt a fan but a Dallas one instead! thats ok, we didnt hold it against her :) . she reccommended a place for supper that we tried called Island Cafe, a place where the "locals" go. chris really enjoyed the crab stuffed jalepenos. his blackened redfish was good too. i had a surf and turf which was ok. while we were there some fishermen came into the place with the fish they had caught during the day and the restaurant cooked it up for them!

next on the list was taking a stroll along the beach. by this time it was around 9pm and so the sun had set,but the temperature was down the bugs pretty much left us alone. it was a nice beach. there were just a few cars parked there and we saw a few people ready to stay the night. (for a small fee you can sleep on the beach). i felt the water which was on the warm side. felt pretty good actually! we had a nice stroll then headed back to our hotel around the corner.

being able to sleep in without having the birds wake us up was definatly a luxery we enjoyed this morning. (esp after getting hardly any sleep the night before thanks to our backyard neighbors-same place where the sheep killer lives. they had a party from 7pm-2am, and we're not talking quiet either. we made several calls to the cops who finally showed up at 2am)

so it was a very lovely and much needed weekend get-away! i definatly want to do it again sometime, once the weather has cooled off a bit and the bugs have died down. pictures will soon follow, once i get them downloaded from the camera!

Let's not forget all the copycats we saw there. Corups Christi is the home of the Whataburger chain of restaurants. We passed a "Whatashnitzel." Then there was the "My Wife's Cafe and Botique" and "My Best Friend's Restaurant" and "My cousin's uncle's brother's nephew's former roomate's adult bookstore and video."

Speaking of Whataburger, Lani was befuddled when asked if she wanted to go all the way... with her burger that is! (The kid was asking if she wanted all the toppings available on her burger.) Lani almost responded with "I don't let anyone get past second base on a first date," which is true. She just didn't realize what he meant. I was laughing so much that I think both she and the kid behind the register were slightly annoyed!

Yes, I loved the stuffed jalepenos. I can't usually eat them when they're stuffed with cheeze, so this was a real treat. They were absolutely perfect! Having lived in Daytona for 10 years, I greatly prefer fresh seafood; this food was so good it was worth the visit! You just have to mind your manners or you'll get the $10 pain in the **** fee.

I had a great time with even better company. Thanks, babe! You're the best-est!
