so i got up this morning around 5:30am to take chris to the airport. he is going to his uncle's wedding and won't be back till monday evening. that means i have the house to myself all weekend. in the past i've really enjoyed having the place to myself, but as of late i realized how isolated i've become.
take for example a situation which occured this evening. i was replacing some lightbulbs in a fixture in our dining room. once i had the new bulbs in place i turned on the switch but the lights shorted out and it smelt like something burning. i checked the circuit breaker box, and it had gone off. i checked the bulbs noticing that one of them was all burned out. i replaced it again, turned the breaker switch back on, then turned on the light switch and this time sparks flew out from the fixture. needless to say i got very worried, i've never encountered such a thing, and this particular light is right between 2 bird cages. my initial fear was that it would spark again and either hurt the birds or the house! i looked at my watch and it was exactly the time the wedding was starting, so i couldnt call chris. my dad who normally lives just a few minutes away from me is in germany right now, so obviously i couldnt call him. i went outside to see if my neighbors across the street were home (they've become good friends of ours) but they were not home. i was starting to panic. then i remembered my Bible study leaders and called them. thankfully they were home, just sitting down to dinner, but home. i explained what happened and they ended up coming over after they were through with the meal. kurt checked the fixture and said one of the connections had indeed burned/shorted out. we put bulbs in the rest of the spots and turned it on, and whola it worked fine. the other side effect from all this is that the dimmer switch is now busted. oh well.
so the point of my long and drawn out story? there is one, trust me. the point is that had kurt not been home tonight i dont know what i would have done. looking back i see it was pretty much a minor incident but its the point-what if some emergency had occured? this town has thousands and thousands of people, but aside from those mentioned above i pretty much know nobody else to contact.
i have isolated myself pretty well. and it stinks.
