Playing God??

So I've been feeling convicted on the issue of fertility drugs. We all hear about the increased possibility of multiple births associated with taking them. My doctor also told me due to the Met.Syn and PCOS and other personal history i'm prime candidate for gestational diabetes, miscarriage, and preeclampsia .

She said that even if i wasn't interested in fertility, that we needed to get controll of these problems for health sake. I totally agree.

However, my feeling is this: why put myself at risk and/or my baby's life in order to obtain a selfish result? I'm all for getting healthy, no problem with that. But isnt forcing fertility playing God? Making something happen that maybe isnt suppossed to?

Unfortunatly women are selfish and play God all the time and have abortions, deciding where and when to take a life, or not even admitting there is a living creature inside them. Life begins at conception! No person should be able to play God and decide when a life isnt worthy. and then there are many women out there who choose to give their baby up for adoption- very hard and sacrifical act. someone very close to me did this and i know how difficult it was for her-but she knew the families that adopt those children are extremely blessed and can do more for the child than otherwise.

Some women can concieve but kill their baby. some women concieve and give ther baby up for adoption. some women concieve, have a healthy pregancy and have that blessing the rest of their life. So what about those of us who may not be able to have a child naturally? Should we force the issue with fertility drugs? Play God and risk the lives of the child and ourselves?

i know this is a controversial post. but i feel very strongly about certain issues, and i would love to hear any comments you may have!

My gut-check says that fertility drugs do not constitute "playing God." They augment an ,unfortunately sick, natural system in the body that God created. Accepting the aurgument would require one to declare that anti-biotics (boosting of immunity system)to be God-only workshop. This line of thinking generally leads to Christian Science type of thinking.

In the case of fertility drugs, I think people equate fertility drugs to secondary sinful actions... Abortion, selling embryos for stem cells, etc. This is like outlawing guns in general because some people commit crimes with them.

Participate in fertility programs and be a good steward of your body!

I would agree with you. I think even medication forms of birth control aren't necessarily the best way to go. God is sovereign even over our bodies and has a design for everything. Now, will I take medication to treat cancer, colds or anything - yes, they are different.

Well, Lani, I haven't been in your position. I had no problem getting preggers, getting them out was another matter!:) I think that you have to do everything in your life with prayer! I personally, think that fertility drugs aren't "playing God" anymore that the antibiotics that Jeremy mentioned; although I think that you have to be careful with the harvesting of eggs etc. I agree with you that we are on a slippery slope with many of these medical issues. Also, the risks that you mention may be more for you due to your medical conditions, but pregnancy carries high risks for all of us. I have seen perfectly "healthy" women end up with ges. diabetes, preeclampsia and the like.
Ultimately, you have to decide what to do. You will know what is right... just listen and you will know.
