wild Quaker Parrots

our bird, Guiness , is a Quaker Parrot. Quakers have a very distinctive squak. once you know what it sounds like you can easily tell if the petstore is selling one without even having to go to the bird dept. same thing for the bird shows...i enter the building, listen, and know exactly where the Quakers are being kept.

about a year or so ago i was in the parking lot at a grocery store here. i was putting my groceries in my car and thought i heard a Quaker sound. startled, i looked around the parking lot, and saw a flock of wild Quakers in a nearby tree!! there were 4 of them. (no, i did not take this photo...its from the internet) i had no idea there was a colony here in San Antonio. i drove around the area hoping to see more, but to no avail. it was such a joy to see some in the wild! about 6 months later i was at the same shopping center and was blessed again to catch a glimpse of the colony again, this time flying around.

in the "wild" Quakers can be quite a disturbance. they build elaborate nests and that can cause problems in the electircal wires, etc. and when a bunch of those birds get together they can make some noise! some states have restrictions on owning these birds, and some states have banned Quakers all together..its illegal to sell and own them in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Wyoming.

many months have gone by since i last saw the colony. i thought perhaps they had moved on. but then today as i was at that shopping center again i heard the squak, looked over, and saw a single Quaker sitting on the wire. i dont know where the rest of the family was, but he was sure calling out to them. eventually he flew off. i'm really glad they are still around!!

In my parents' neighborhood, there is a colony of about 15 or so wild quakers. Its neat watching them chase away the crows that come too near to their tree. And you're right, very noisy :)
